Internet Forums

At the moment, this is a one person campaign, but I, Steve Wallis, have set up an internet discussion group for this campaign at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/health-service-sanity which enables anybody else to contribute to discussions of the demands it should put forward and activities it should support or organise. The time for launching the campaign proper, with an actual membership, will probably be after I hopefully become an MP at the next general election, as a vehicle for campaigning against the Mental Health Bill. I have also set up the following discussion groups around mental health, also at groups.yahoo.com (which is where most of the good internet forums are based):

• anti-mental-health-bill. If New Labour passes the Mental Health Bill, it would allow people to be locked up in psychiatric wards on the basis that they may commit a crime at some point in the future, and former psychiatric patients to be forcibly injected against their will in the community. I am putting forward the idea of mobilising ordinary people outside the homes of those threatened with forced injections, like with the baliff busters in the 18 million-strong mass non-payment campaign that defeated the poll tax (which I describe in my autobiography “Transition”).

• anti-olanzapine. Olanzapine (brand name Zyprexa) is the worst anti-psychotic drug, and is therefore the drug of choice within the NHS for particularly political patients (many on my current ward, Brook Ward at Manchester Royal Infirmary) are on it), because it makes you irrationally pessimistic. Despite the fact that I had very strong views about a world socialist revolution being bound to happen (sooner or later) and that I was going to play a leading role in it, at times during the year when I was on olanzapine (albeit briefly) I believed that capitalism would continue forever and that I would have a boring life. It is even prescribed to some people with (manic) depression, and one such person I came across cut himself in many places on his head as a result, becoming disfigured for life. I hit the roof when I found out, but he was kept on the drug and cut himself in yet more places.

• voices-inside. This is a group about a song by my favourite overtly political band of all-time, Latin Quarter, about coping with voices inside your head, which is generally believed to be a sign of mental illness (but can be broadcast by the forces of big business, as one of the methods of mind control revealed in a Channel 5 programme entitled “The world's greatest conspiracy theories”, as I explain in my page on conspiracy theories).

I also regularly send messages to uksurvivors (for survivors of the mental health system, disabled people and our allies) and voicesupporters (for people who hear voices within their mind and their supporters).
